Making Figure Sculpture

 R Sculpture Forum  37 on Youtube    Good to see so much talent gathered together to sculpt from the same model in such diverse ways. And once again, some great side by side comparisons with pieces from two sculptors who could have worked in any clay studio from Donatello’s to Rodin’s. The critics did not pick favorites - but only one piece was set apart, backed by drapery, and given good lighting for the best possible viewing. So maybe they picked a favorite after all. Bruce’s informed commentary is missed and Choghakate offers no more than pleasant conversation. Garth deserves much credit for the existence of both the workshop and the filmed critique. I can only hope that I’m as sharp, productive, and energetic at 90. But he sees model based figure sculpture as an exercise, not an art. And why does he regularly tell us that “something is wrong with the anatomy” when accurate anatomy may not have been the artist’s goal (apparently it seldom was

  Artists unknown Two backs were compared several times. The left approaches heaven - the right submits to purgatory.  A nice way to put it,   but more could be said if we saw the entire statues. Bruce Gagnier I can feel his stare at the piece, making it look just a little bit different. Good to see visual references to Donatello, Giacometti, and Rodin. Regrettably, the lead critic, Garth Evans , apparently does not believe that model based figure sculpture can become art these days (i.e. something more profound than mimetic entertainment or didactic exercise). And no one in the studio contradicts him - possibly because it’s his show. He heads the sculpture department and founded Sculpture Forum, the producer of this video. Apparently, he has not sculpted from models since his student days, back when “...
